Expanding Love
Couple Therapy
As a couple therapist, I use a combination of therapeutic approaches to suit your needs as a couple. My main approach is based on the Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy framework, the most successful therapeutic approach for couples. Research finds that EFT has 75% success rate in healing relationships and 86% in feeling happier as a couple, a significant improvement over other forms of couple therapy (about 35%). In addition, the results of EFT last longer. Sue Johnson developed EFT as a roadmap which will pave the way toward a deeply fulfilling and enduring bond in your relationship.
How EFT works, and what to expect in sessions?
In the first session, we will focus on understanding the existing situation, its difficulties and the needs of the couple. We will discuss the goals as a couple and the expectations of the process and start to track the couple’s “dance” (patterns of action/reaction they follow when in distress).
Next, the 2nd and 3rd sessions are individual sessions, where the individual needs, history and perspectives on attachment theory will begin to be understood. We will talk about their past history since childhood based on attachment perspective and explore with curiosity about how the past is connected with their experiences in the present.
Starting with the 4th session, we will build a platform where the couple can feel heard and seen and can express safely their emotions, needs and ways to connect. In that process, the couple will identify their negative cycles, the impact they cause one another, how to de-escalate the conflict, build a secure base to explore and create their own secure emotional way to feel connected. As the sessions progress, the couple will able to explore, experience and tune into their own emotions, resulting in clearer signals about their deepest needs and desires to their partner. All the while learning to tune in to their partner to respond to their needs too. Those experiences form the basis of a secure bond through “basic steps of the dance of Love”.
